Visit the site at www.onthegreengolfvideos.com The Cheryl Brankel Golf Academy Opens at Carolina NationalCheryl Brankel has been the director of instruction at the Glens Golf Academy at Possum Trot for the past four years. Before that she worked at Classic Swing Golf School, the Surf Golf & Beach Club and Black Bear Golf Club. The Ohio native first entered the golf business in the pro shop at Wild Dunes in Isle of Palms. The school offers one-, two- and three-day golf schools, men's, women's and beginner clinics, and junior camps and clinics, and features the V-1 computerized golf swing analysis program. Brankel plans to hire another instructor or two in the next couple years. She recently became one of just 80 PGA of America professionals to receive a Certification in Instruction through a PGA specialization program and is about to begin working toward attaining Master Professional status. Sea Gull Golf Club to Become "The Founder's Club"Sea Gull Golf Club will be redesigned by former Gary Player Design lead architect Thomas Walker and will run largely along the same route, but with new topography and elevation changes, as well as more native and waste areas to set tees, fairways and greens apart. The course will also have a new name - "The Founders Club at Pawleys Island." Groundbreaking on course is expected July 24, with a reopening under the new name by Sept. 1, 2007. The new name was initially announced as Pawleys Island Golf Club, but there was concern it could be confused with Pawleys Plantation. There is already a Founders Club at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C., which is about 85 miles up the coast from the Sea Gull site, but Sea Gull's owners will keep Pawleys Island in the name in all marketing. Himmelsbach Communications suffered a great loss with the death of our esteemed editor and proofreader extraordinaire, Gloria Marquez. This vibrant and intellectual woman was introduced to me by my agency partner Vern Hearl in 1984. During our interview I was taken aback by her sophistication and background. Gloria had done major editing for a leading publishing company in New York, before coming to Myrtle Beach with her loving husband. I wasn't quite sure at the time that I needed someone of her caliber for my young and fledgling publishing company. She convinced me for the first, but certainly not the last, time that she was exactly what I needed. The hiring of Gloria turned out to be one of the best decisions of my business life. She was in so many ways the perfect employee–loyal, smart, outspoken and truly brilliant with the English language. Gloria's contribution cannot be measured in words. Her insight, kindness and dedication to all those she touched will never be forgotten. Her love and involvement in the World Amateur Handicap Championship is legendary. Gloria Marquez is truly irreplaceable. On behalf of my partners Jack and Judy, our staff, past and present, I will simply say that we will always be grateful that Gloria Marquez was a part of our lives and we will always miss her. God bless you dearest Gloria and I know for sure you are up there with the good Lord in heaven proofreading the Holy Bible. Angels Trace Golf Links to Become "Jaguar's Lair"By the end of the year, Angels Trace Golf Links will cease to exist. Owner Mark Saunders intends to convert its 36 holes into 18 through a major rebuilding and continue a trend of course redevelopment in the area by creating up to 1,100 single-family homesites around the course. The 11-year-old facility will lose its name and become part of Ocean Ridge Plantation, just up the road from Angels Trace on N.C. 904 and also owned by Saunders. Tim Cate, whose designs include Ocean Ridge courses Tiger's Eye and Panther's Run, will redesign the new course, which will be called Jaguar's Lair and could open by fall 2007. Holes on both Angels Trace courses will be used for the new layout. The back nine of the South course will remain somewhat intact and become the front nine, though greens and bunkers may be moved and pars could be changed. Cate will create new holes on much of the property. Every hole will be stripped and 419 Bermudagrass in fairways will be replaced by a higher quality TifSport Bermuda. The course will receive a new irrigation system, and new bunkers, greens and tee boxes will be built. The clubhouse will also be renovated, and planned amenities around it include a tennis complex, indoor racquet facilities, swimming pool and fitness club. “LISTEN TO YOUR HEART” Golf TournamentThe 4th Annual CHRISTOPHER JOSEPH CARROLL “LISTEN TO YOUR HEART” Golf Tournament will be played on the beautiful 27 holes of Heather Glen Golf Links on Saturday, August 25, 2007. The fee of $100 per person includes not only greens and cart fees, breakfast, and lunch, but also a steak and chicken dinner provided by the Outback Steakhouse of Myrtle Beach, SC - who have so powerful a commitment to our tournament that they have signed for sponsorship thru 2008! Participants also receive a golf hat, and a chance at multiple prizes and raffles. There will be a 10 am Captain’s Choice shotgun start. Also scheduled are a hole-in-one contest, with 2007 autos as prizes (courtesy of Lavin Cars and 1st Choice Auto), and a $10,000 putt contest, to finish off a truly meaningful golfing day. Heisman trophy winner George Rogers, Clemson’s Donnell Woolford, heavyweight champion James “Bonecrusher” Smith, and Comedy Central’s Manny Olivera played in the 2006 tournament and have committed to return for the 2007 tournament. Tournament officials are looking forward to having nine celebrities next year and giving teams the opportunity to play golf with them. There will be a field of 224 golfers. The 2007 tournament will be a great day of golf, celebrities, super prizes, scholarships for local high school seniors, and more. Bay Tree ClosedBay Tree was among the first of several local golf courses to announce its closure when Centex officials met with Bay Tree residents to divulge their plans in October 2004. Bay Tree, located on S.C. 9, just outside of North Myrtle Beach, opened in 1972. Its three courses - the Green, Gold and Silver - were designed by Russell Breeden and George and Tom Fazio. The Green Course has been the site of several significant tournaments, including the 1975 spring PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament finals, won by Joey Dills, as well as the spring 1976 Q-School finals, won by Bob Shearer and Woody Blackburn. Wild Wing to Close 45 Holes45 of Wild Wing’s 72 holes will close permanently, to make room for 1,100 houses. Only the Avocet course will be unaffected. In June 2006, the Hummingbird and Wood Stork courses will close. The Falcon course is expected to close in early 2007. An additional nine holes will be salvaged from 2 holes of the Wood Stork course and seven holes of the Hummingbird layout. This nine won’t reopen until later in 2007, bringing Wild Wing up to 27 holes open for play. Pine Lakes Country Club to be Redesigned and RedevelopedBurroughs & Chapin Co. Inc. has proposed redeveloping Pine Lakes International Country Club. The course will continue as an 18-hole layout, but only six of the holes will be relatively unchanged. The other 12 will swap “nines” and hole numbers. One of the affected holes is the par-3 seventh hole, the long-time station of Perry "Big Dog" Bellamy who serves the golfers hot chowder while wearing his white chef hat. On The Green thinks that Perry will probably pack up his chowder pot and move to another hole. Some undeveloped property adjacent to the course will be the site of single-family and multifamily housing, cottages, and an inn. The entire planned unit development will measure 289 acres. The redesign will be done by Craig Schreiner, who is a co-designer with Nick Price of the Members Club at Grande Dunes. Deer Track South Course to CloseFrom the Myrtle Beach Sun News Bill Clark Homes plans to buy the south golf course of Deer Track Golf Resort and redevelop it into 500 mostly single-family and some single-level courtyard homes. The 18-hole course winds through the resort - a development of about 2,000 homes - near Surfside Beach. It will remain open until the end of April, said Jeff Farrell, Myrtle Beach division president for Bill Clark Homes. The resort's Toski Links north course will remain open. Diminished golf profits on the Grand Strand and skyrocketing land values have led many golf course owners to sell to developers. Deer Track resort was built in 1972. Deer Track South would be the 17th course since 1999 to close or become redeveloped in the coastal Carolinas.
